L. Weaver
I am an avid Amazon.com customer when it comes mainly to books. I remember when I first saw Amazon's online "upgrade" for one of the books I purchased. I could pay a reasonable fee and read it online. My biggest problem was that I could not carry my computer around with me. So I began reading the specs for Kindle 6" Global wireless device and decided to take a chance. It was the best decision I made when it comes to electronic devices. I am amazed at the features, such as bookmarks, adding notes, highlighting, transferring personal documents, searching the contents of books, and more. I am in graduate school and it definitely lightens the stress of voluminous reading. When I want to separate my college work from my non-college reading I can set Kindle to show me my books that are not related to college. Then, I can set it to "personal docs" and it lists only the files related to my courses. I am so thrilled with Kindle 2. The wireless feature is awesome seeing that my notes, bookmarks, etc., are stored online in the folder "My clips." Just imagine having 5-10 books around you and needing to search them, look at your notes in the book, etc. I would be pulling my hair out. But with Kindle I can do all those things and more. My thanks to Amazon for their services.

Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6" Display, Global Wireless, Latest Generation)

"educational wonder!!!" 2010-03-19
By P. Zylstra (Chicago, IL USA)
We gave this to our 14 yr old grandson for his birthday. He will be entering High School next year. He is an avid reader (7000 pages during grade school summer)and will be taking honors classes next year. What a great GREEN gift for our young students. No large books to tote around. He is hoping his classroom text books will be available for downloading. Neat idea for these students who have to run from class to class and tote 50 lbs of books with them. He is never without his KINDLE in hand and even his classmates are constantly asking him for dictionary help in classroom. I cannot tell other grandparents enough--- if they want to invest in their grandchildren's educational future -- start them early. I know it's a little pricey but well worth the investment. It's your grandchild!!

"LOVE IT!" 2010-03-19
By Rachel Welt (Minneapolis, MN)
I bought the Kindle as a post-Christmas present for myself and I love it! It is well worth the money! One of the things that is great is that it is so light and easy to handle. The page buttons are on each side so you can hold it in one hand for awhile and then switch to the other hand, essentially being able to turn pages with one hand no matter if you're right of left handed. After reading two books on the Kindle I read a paperback library book and you can really tell the difference. I had to actually hold the book with both hands *gasp*, but it makes a difference if you are like me and like to switch up positions while reading.

My mother is an avid reader and I wasn't sure if she would like the Kindle, I borrowed her mine in the hopes of if she liked it I would buy her one for her 60th birthday this year. My plan backfired, she bought it for herself and it came last week. I have yet to talk to anyone who does not love it!

"Kindle beats the Nook hands down!" 2010-03-19
By M. Anceravige (Ashland, Pa. United States)
The features I like about the Kindle is the full page of script, I can do without the "Colored" navigation sub screen. Book sharing is not an issue with me so I don't miss that feature either. One thing though the Kindle could use placing a time clock in the top Info bar. I tend to get carried away when reading and often loose track of time.

"Defective Screen and Poor Customer Service" 2010-03-19
By Kieran (Japan)
First, let me say that I did enjoy using my kindle for the first three or four weeks that I had it and was impressed by amazon's speedy international delivery.

However, when I tried to turn on my kindle a couple of days ago, the screen went all garbled with lines down one side and a severely darkened version of what it should be displaying. I tried to reset the kindle (by holding the power button across for 20+ seconds) and the device did reboot, but the screen was still not displaying properly and as such, the text is unreadable and the device useless to me now. Apparently quite a lot of people have had similar problems after dropping their kindle, but in my case I DID NOT drop it or damage it in any way. In fact it has just been sitting on my desk for the last week or so, until I tried to turn it on and the screen malfunctioned.

This in itself is quite inconvenient and annoying, but to make matters worse, amazon's customer service with resolving the issue has been extremely frustrating and expensive to say the least.

There is a service on the amazon web site which allows you to request someone to call you back and provide support over the phone. This is a great service (I assume), except that the system would not allow me to enter my phone number as it is a mobile phone number (there are very few land lines where I live in Japan and so a mobile number is all I have). So instead I emailed support and detailed my problem with the kindle. Instead of trying to give me any advice, they simply asked me to use the call back feature on the site, or call them. Well since I couldn't use the call back feature, I stated this in another email and listed my phone number in the email asking them to call me. This was met with ANOTHER request to use the call back feature which I had already stated I could not use!

Eventually I gave up and was forced to call the US office from Japan on my mobile phone and spent about 20 minutes detailing the problem (which I had already done in my first email) and waiting for the assistant to look up various things on their end.

In the end they agreed to send me a replacement unit for free, but for customs reasons needed to charge my credit card again (and then immediately refund the money). Unfortunately my credit card information had changed so I needed to go on the website and update the information and then call them back. I then spent another 20 minutes or so on the phone with them a second time going through the whole ordering process again. Surely this is something that could have been done by email??

To their credit, the service assistants I spoke to were polite and I do not place any blame on them, but I really think amazon needs to rethink their service when it comes to helping international customers. I am certainly not looking forward to getting my phone bill next month!

As for the kindle itself, when it works it is generally a pleasure to use. At least for reading novels.

I do not think it is well suited to certain types of books (language related, reference books, children's books, or anything with pictures).

The interface is generally good, although it would be much easier to navigate with a touchscreen (like the iphone kindle app). I also would prefer if the home button on the right side was placed near the menu button and replaced with a prev page button.

I usually don't write negative reviews, but I'm sorry to say that I do not think I would buy another kindle in the future. Trujillo (Nevada)
My husband purchased the Kindle DX Wireless Reading Device for my birthday this year. I turned 56 and my eyesight is not what it used to be so I was not enjoying reading books as I've always done in the past. Since receiving my Kindle, I'm back to reading every chance I get. I love the convenience of downloading a book in less than 30 seconds and being able to hold the Kindle with one hand comfortably and also the setting of the bigger font. It has been the best present I've ever received. I love it and cannot say enough good things about it.

"books cost too much, great tool" 2010-03-19
By Christopher M. Schmid (Florida, USA)
i would love to use this book for school but the price of USED text books cost less than the Kindle discount price. what is worse is that i can sell the used text book when i am done reading it which makes the cost difference even greater.

"I don't go anywhere without it" 2010-03-19
By Paulo Bandeira
Exactly what I was looking for. After researching several products I opted for Kindle and I'm sure I made the right choice. Now I can take all my books with me everywhere I go.

"Hardware good downloads not" 2010-03-19
By David Lloyd (Halifax, West Yorlshire)
Firstly the good bit - The kindle is very good although you'll need a US main adaptor to charge it from the mains (I thought it was a legal requirement for electrical items to be fitted with a UK 3 pin plug here - But I guess Amazon get round this by directing you to the US site to buy it - Sneeky!)

Now the bad bits - I was on holiday in Egypt recently so decided to download a UK newspaper. What a load of rubbish! One picture on page one and thats your lot! The rest is one huge wad of text bearing no resemblance to the actual newspaper and this was the case for all the UK papers. I also wanted to download probably one of the most popular series of books for sale at the moment - One of the Harry Potter books but amazingly they're not available! The kindle is also supposed to let you browse certain sites (well they'relisted on the menu) These include Amazon, CNN and the BBC but I've had no success as yet.

So all in all a good product mared by lousy support - My opinion - Buy an Ipad when it's released - wish I'd waited!

"DX - I love it!" 2010-03-19
By Jeanie Haupt (San Luis Obispo, CA)
Unlike many other reviewers, this is my very first Kindle. My neighbor has a Kindle 2 and has been hassling me for a year to purchase one. My only concern about the Kindle 2 was that I really wanted to be able to download computer reference books & think the screen is much too small for that. My hesitation and why it took me so long to buy a DX is because of the price. $500 is pretty pricey for me, although a new competitor's product is being offered for around the same price. I first downloaded Kindle for my pc and after reading on my laptop, decided to get the real thing so that it was easier on my eyes & I could enjoy the book in bed.

PROS - 1) Keyboard for easy searching. I know others have complained about the numbers being integrated with the top row of letters, but this wasn't a big deal to me. 2) Bookmarks, highlights, & clipping - I LOVE this feature! I subscribe to Technology Review & Newsweek magazines and love the fact that I can clip articles for export to pc or highlight the sections that I want to revisit quickly in the future. This is also helpful with my pc books when I want to revisit a particular segment & can find it quickly. 3) Online ordering - I think it is great that I can sit just about anywhere and search for my next read. And once when I couldn't get signal in a bad area, I was able to login with my pc to a wireless network & then transfer the book over. Nice! 4) Hidden games - yep, I bet you didn't know but the DX & Kindle 2 both have a couple of hidden games like minesweep. Not major graphics games but sometimes helps to take the boredom off when you are sitting at the airport or a waiting room for extended periods and want something more interactive than just reading. 5) FREE books! Yes, I have downloaded quite a few free books from Amazon and enjoyed the read. Sure, I purchased quite a few, also, but it's nice to try a new author for cheap or free once in a while. Never know what you are going to find. 5) Magazine subscriptions - I already mentioned in a previous point, but I love that I get to wake up on Sunday morning & read Newsweek while having my coffee. And if I'm too busy to read, I don't feel guilty that I wasted a bunch of paper!! 6) Text to speech - I know the voice can be a little robotic, but sometimes it is nice even at the gym when I'm pedaling the bike hard & can't focus on the words as easily. And when I've had a little insomnia, my little DX has read me to sleep. 7) Screen rotation - This is a GREAT feature! I've read that reviews about pdf files being difficult to read and I concur that sometimes that is the case in portrait mode. However, I can turn landscape and it's like reading on my laptop. Yet, I don't get the eye strain that I do my pc. 8) PDF viewing - I subscribe to a financial newsletter that I can download in pdf & I really like that I can take this stuff with me. 9) Portability & layout - I like that I can flip the screen any of 4 directions so the page turning buttons can be on the bottom, top, or either side. In landscape, I like putting them on the bottom, so that I can just keep my thumb on the bottom of the kindle & press Next Page easily. This little guy is bigger than K2, but still very portable and not too heavy. I take it just about everywhere with me. To me, this little guy is just so comfortable and fun to use. 10) Screen - No eye strain, no finger prints. It's like reading paper & can touch the screen without my oily finger prints being left behind. And it is perfectly visible in the bright sunlight! 11) Long battery life - I use this thing all of the time & charge it about once a week. I admit, I normally keep the wireless turned off.

CONS - I only really have 2 cons. 1) Some of the books have highlighted passages that appear as images & can sometimes be difficult to read. Wish they could find a way to add a gray background as the highlight without turning it into an image. 2) Lack of ability to file books/documents into folders like a computer. That would be very handy, especially when you get a lot of books & documents. Then I could have categories of fiction, work, fitness, or whatever, which would make it easier to go through.

Overall, like I said, I absolutely LOVE my Kindle DX!! This is one purchase I can say without a doubt has been completely worth it. I carry it around with me almost everywhere. Anyone I've ever met who owns one loves it. If you're comparing this to another device, I strongly recommend getting the Kindle. I suppose it depends on your needs, though. For me, I already have a pc and phone so I didn't want another device with the same features. This is much easier on my eyes at night & so easy to read during the day. Even with the new technologies, I'd still choose this one.

**I wanted to mention that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because of price & the poorer quality of some highlighted passages in books. Other than those 2 points, I'd give it a definite 5!

All Reviews

<ins style="display: inline-table; border: medium none; height: 90px; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 728px;"><ins style="display: block; border: medium none; height: 90px; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 728px;"></ins></ins>
<ins style="display: inline-table; border: medium none; height: 90px; margin: 0pt; padding: 0pt; position: relative; visibility: visible; width: 728px;"></ins>
